Has there ever been a more exciting time to be a marketer? It’s hard to think of one. Today’s marketers have access to an ever-increasing and ever-more-powerful array of tools to help them better understand and communicate with their current and prospective customers. Newsletters are being delivered to mobile phones in readable formats. Customers are providing organizations with updated contact information through interactive customer care sites. Friends are endorsing products and services through social media sites. One of my colleagues even made an on-line donation this year by buying a “virtual goat” for a farmer in Africa! The opportunities are endless. Of course while these tools provide limitless opportunities they can also be misused. The most successful marketers will be those who determine which tools make the most sense for their organizations and then ensure they are optimally integrated to provide their customers and prospects with the best possible experiences. They will embrace new ideas without abandoning ones that are tried and true. Most importantly they will cut through the clutter of options available to them, eschewing “bells and whistles” that will increase their costs with no corresponding increase in revenue.
